Here's what I've learned about these two simple words with infinite meanings. Use them in a debate or argument and you're immediately discredited. Ex: Ugh! You NEVER wash your dishes. You ALWAYS leave them in the sink for me to wash.
Guess what happens now? Your roommate will recall the ONE time they washed their own dishes. Ex: You're kidding, right?! I washed dishes that year we hosted Thanksgiving! Besides, how can I ALWAYS leave dishes in the sink when I'm the take out queen?! In their mind, you're discredited and they are vindicated. What now? You've still got a solid gripe, but it's gotten lost in infinite discredit. Try it again without the words "always" &/or "never". Ex: It seems there's dirty dishes in the sink I know I didn't use, but get stuck washing. Can we agree to clean up after ourselves? Neither one of us should get stuck cleaning up after the other. Deal? This applies to all situations and all relationships.....friends, husbands, business, whatever. The minute someone uses "never" &/or "always" they've essentially lost all credibility, right out of the gate. Surssly. Just omit these infinite words next time you have to make a point and see how much better the conversation goes. ;)
